Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what people ask most.

The app

What is an ALPR?

An automated license plate reader is a camera that photographs passing vehicles and reads their plates automatically, usually recording the time and place. They're mounted on poles, traffic lights and police cars. Our explainer has more.

Is NitoPath for avoiding cameras?

It's for knowing where they are. Some people prefer routes with fewer cameras; others prefer to stay on monitored roads. NitoPath plans either way and leaves the choice to you.

Which phones does it run on?

NitoPath is coming to iPhone and Android. Follow the News page for release dates.

Can I use NitoPath on a computer?

Yes. Open it in your browser to search, plan and compare routes, and export them as GPX. Subscriptions are bought in the phone app; sign in on the web with the same account and the camera features are there too.

Do I need an account?

No. Navigation, search and saved places work without one. An account lets your saved places, settings and trip history follow you between devices, and lets you report cameras.

Camera data

Where does the camera data come from?

From OpenStreetMap, where volunteers map cameras, many of them through the DeFlock project. NitoPath refreshes its copy every few hours.

Is it complete?

No, and it never will be. A route with no known cameras can still pass cameras nobody has mapped, recently installed ones, or mobile ones. NitoPath doesn't make you anonymous and doesn't make any route safe.

A camera is missing or in the wrong place. What do I do?

Use Report a camera in the app (you'll need to be signed in). We review reports and approved ones can be added to the map. You can also add it directly at deflock.org/report.

Subscription

What's free and what's Pro?

Navigation, search, multiple stops, saved places, trip history, the camera map and each route's camera count are free. Routing around cameras (or toward them), camera alerts and Drive mode are Pro. See Pricing.

How do I cancel?

Through the store you subscribed with: the App Store (Settings → your name → Subscriptions) or Google Play (Profile → Payments and subscriptions). Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal. Deleting the app doesn't cancel it.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their policies. Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com. Google: request it from your order history in Google Play.

Privacy

Does NitoPath track my location?

Only while the app is open and you've allowed it. Camera alerts are worked out on your phone. Your continuous location trail is never uploaded. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.

Do you sell my data?

No. We don't sell personal information, share it with data brokers, or use it for advertising.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, open Account → Delete account. More options on the Delete your account page.
